Pregnancy Yoga

One-to-One

Yoga is an ancient, holistic art that encompasses a mindful approach to exercise. Traditionally, yoga was taught one-to-one with the teacher taking into account the individual needs of the student. This is particularly important during pregnancy as the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy and motherhood are quite different for each woman.

Doing yoga helps to tone the muscles and make the body more supple without impacting on the joints. The focus on breathing also helps the mother to relax and adjust more easily to the various demands of pregnancy, labour, birth and motherhood. As the pregnancy develops, postures are continually adjusted to take account of the changing needs of the mother and her baby.

There are many benefits to practising yoga for pregnancy and birth, including:

  • Encourages greater body awareness
  • Improved posture can help ease back problems
  • Breathing techniques can increase comfort and reduce stress levels
  • Greater elasticity in the ligaments can help reduce discomfort in labour
  • A more flexible body can adopt different positions in labour more easily
  • Boosts blood circulation

After the Birth

Usually about six weeks after birth, the mother is able to take up yoga again. Practising yoga after the birth helps to strengthen the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor. This can help the mother regain her levels of fitness and get her shape back more quickly and easily.
