Why Have a Doula?

Benefits of a Doula

The benefits of continuous support provided by a Doula during childbirth include:

  • Shorter labour
  • Lower rates of caesarean birth
  • Lower rates of forceps and vacuum extraction deliveries
  • Reduced rates of medical induction
  • Reduced need for analgesia

Research has shown that mothers who receive continuous emotional and physical support from a Doula rate childbirth as a less painful and less difficult experience than women who do not have the support of a Doula.

Mothers who are supported by a Doula have:

  • Lower anxiety scores
  • Higher reports of positive feelings around the birth experience
  • Higher rates of successful breastfeeding
  • Decreased rates of depression
  • Improved levels of self esteem
  • Increased rates of exclusive breastfeeding

A Doula can provide continuous support throughout a mother's experience of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum phases of childbearing. Continuity throughout these phases can help the mother to feel supported and relaxed, contributing to a more positive birth experience.

For some mothers it is reassuring to know that they have a support person present to be their advocate. A person who is supportive, has a good knowledge of birth, and a thorough understanding of the mother's needs, choices and also her hopes for the experience of birthing her baby.
